Battlefield 1 takes the series to World War 1 – a conflict that was one of the most bloody and horrifying in modern history, though this doesn’t preclude it from including an unexpectedly moving section where you play as a pigeon. It’s not the first time a game has let us briefly, bizarrely be an animal, as Show of the Week discovers. Grand Theft Auto 5, for instance, introduced animal gameplay in its next-gen versions thanks to the inclusion of peyote plants found scattered throughout Los Santos which, when consumed, gave your player character of choice mind-bending hallucinations of being a range of animals, from an adorable pug to a ferocious hammerhead shark.
And while you weren’t actually transforming into a dog in Call of Duty: Ghosts, the sections in the game where you took control of Riley, canine defender of the American Way, were the next best thing, letting you see through Riley’s eyes and attack unwary enemies with his powerful jaws.
It reminds us a bit of Dog Mode from 1994’s Rise of the Triad, which let you transform into a dog and attack people. This mode also gave you the BarkBlast, a mighty shockwave attack that gibs your enemies. Dogs have been keeping that one quiet, hey?
