NASA Remembers Moonwalker, Shuttle Commander John Young

Astronaut John Young, who walked on the Moon during Apollo 16 and commanded the first space shuttle mission, has passed away at the age of 87.

He is the only person to go into space as part of the Gemini, Apollo and space shuttle programs and was the first to fly into space six times — or seven times, when counting his liftoff from the Moon during Apollo 16.

  1. I remember hearing an anecdote about the first shuttle flight.  It was reported that Mr. Crippen's heart rate was well over 100 while Mr. Young, the veteran that he was by then, remained in the 60s.  That really gave me a chuckle.  Well done Mr. Young, you made us Earthlings proud.

  2. Rest In Peace, you have done so many great things, we will all miss and remember you and your brave services, you have helped the push towards mars and other celestial bodies beyond the moon. Thank you John Young.

  3. Why is NASA still publishing so foolish fake Moon landing history to the world? Every of NASA Appolo missions was just and only a big Hoax. Lie about they have landed and put men on the moon? Jon Young never walked on the Moon… No human has walked on the Moon, because of the Van Allen radiation (deadly) magnet felt nobody has sussed yet to do so!

  4. RIP John, i will always remember you as the enthousiastic kid coming down from the steps of Columbia on the Space Shuttle's first flight, that is the spirit of mankind.

  5. As a science teacher today, I recall my memories of watching the American space program in the late 1960's and early 70's as a young boy. Astronauts like John Young, Neil Armstrong, I believe, were the ones who inspired me to wonder about this great universe and the "good Earth" that we call home; true heroes indeed. Its sad to see them depart. God speed John Young!

  6. RIP.

When are NASA going to be posting up a slightly longer tribute? <2 minutes after all he achieved with Gemini, Apollo, STS, and later with the astronaut office isn’t exactly overwhelming. The ad leading to this lasted longer.

  7. It was sad to hear Mr.John Young pasted away two days ago. Along with the first few men to walk on the moon, his heart and legacy will always be remembered.

  8. Wow what a shame to loose such a key person to the evolution of space travel. He has been involved from the begining and to see a glimpse of whats to come for the future of space travel must have urged him to want to somehow keep it touch with it. To his family and friends, condolence and thanks for all his life risking contributions to helping mankind getting closer to interplanetary space travelling. He will be remembered.

  9. Великий астронавт. RIP. Дважды летал на трёх разных типах космических аппаратов, – Джемини, Аполлон, Спейс Шаттл. Дважды летал к Луне. Совершил три выхода на лунную поверхность. Работал в NASA 42 года. Покойся с миром.
