Thing r pretty expensive. But there r many wise way to save up your money. Study about JR rail pass if you wanna travel within Japan.
You should look for guest houses. Those are cheaper than hotels. You can get useful info from other guests.

@pleirlat4 things and food cost pretty much the same as europe (if not less), transports are REALLY efficient but cost more than in europe (metro almost the same, a bit more, but train a lot more comparing to France or Spain). I have to say that in Japan these is a large choice for almost anything so you can choose cheap or expensive things as you want but to make a comparison it's a lot less expensive than Switzerland and it's almost at UK level.
