Even for 2001 this looks pretty damn good
I thought this was real movie when it
Came out, I was a fuckin idiot lol
Been trying to find this movie for the last decade.
As someone who has next to no knowledge about the Final Fantasy-Games, is there any connection story-wise between any of them and this movie?
This shit was beyond cutting edge back then.
this is insane level of quality, no we have love death and robots
awesome movie, garbage trailer
Huh. I haven't seen any footage of this in so many years and it was remembered so poorly in those years by everyone (one of the first things people think of when the term "uncanny valley" comes up, for example) that I was caught off guard by how good this looks for 2001. Like, sure, it's dated, but it didn't age nearly as bad as other attempts at more photorealistic/naturalistic CGI around this time. It was a huge milestone for CGI, and the first of its kind in the box office. Probably wasn't necessary to market it as "Final Fantasy," even though there are some things in common such as the themes (relationship between man, technology, and the ecosystem for example) and the general sci-fi fantasy aesthetic… But I guess they were counting on the brand recognition, and it was a natural evolution of what Square had been trying to achieve up to that point with digital art since Final Fantasy VII anyway.
Kind of a shame what they did to Aki with the bikini shit tho
Sorry, but this movie sucked. Bad. Want to know why? Because it was called Final Fantasy. Every fan boy of the series went to go see it. I won't call you an idiot for liking it, because everyone has a particular taste. But the title should have just been called "Spirits Within". It might have done better. But using a game title, this was almost as bad as Doom with the Rock
Anyone know the name of the song used from 1:50 onwards
Pior adaptação de final fantasy da história da humanidade kkkkk assistindo essa pérola em 2022
best cartoon 😷.
I love this final fantasy
Does anyone remember the Halo Trailer with this? It was so good!!!
We need a remake now using CGI
This movie slapped and is a bit part of why I got so into animation and animation type movies.
Ohow
I saw this in theatres, I was thrilled to see Blizzard ( I’m aware this is not a Blizzard production) but I always wanted a full length movie with that quality CG. There is a scene with a close up of a flying Eagle; I remember wondering how they got a camera onto an Eagle in flight because it looked so real. The graphics still hold water today! This was a really great story and very well acted by all.
I never understood why they called this final fantasy. I grew p on the Medieval fantasy ones and this things does not even have anything o do with Crystals. They likely did it for name recognition, even if the only FF thing about is having a Cid.
Advent children was no better, closer to the FF7 story sure, but to someone who never played FF7 i had NO IDEA what was going on. And some people i know didn't watch due to this movie. The Idea of another FF movie was just bothersome, and not liking this movie told them they would not like the games either. (Turns out a few don't like JRPGs at all so at least they were right about that part)
espinage
The movie was graphically groundbreaking. It failed because it had the name final fantasy but had nothing to do with the video games. The best VG movies at least tie in and have some familiarity. Like Jill in the RE movies. This had none of that. I mean at least have a gun sword for crying out loud.
But visually and in this CGI this is one of the most important movies of its time. Same as Tron.
This easily could have been a game which would have been cool
Movie trailers have come a long way in terms of conception and composition, often for thr better but sometimes for worse… but I'm sure glad we moved on from trailer voice-over guy.
im studying animation and this film is constantly brought up in discussions of realism
I watched it 3 times in the cinema. 1st time on my own on release day, 2nd time with a date and 3rd time with a good friend. I remember each instance vividly. Nice memories connected to this movie 🙂
This looks so good considering its 20 years old movie lool
Pretty good movie and animation for 2001. The concept that the earth is a living organism is a highly plausible idea that all scientists today need to consider very very seriously.
A very good movie to that everyone should watch. Animation and overall plot is excellent. "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" is better that pretty much any movie out there today….
The whole thing looks like a bunch of cutscenes, no wonder reviewers and other people hated it.
Obviously, We were kids before PS2
such a deppresing film, it's actually quite beautiful
This was NOT the movie we were promised. That's all I'm saying!
#one of BEST ever!!!!,quality!!!!!!
I remember when this trailer came and I was so hyped for this film! Read tons of making of and went and started learning this hard software back in the day called Maya because of it! Well, it turned out good and I’ve had a very good career since in the industry! things got very exciting when I worked for these guys as well a couple years later! Fun times! All thanks to this movie (Regardless how the actual movie is)
misunderstood and underrated film, way ahead of its time
This trailer is SO 90s generic! That ending music that was in like 100 movie trailers from this time.
Watching it I couldn’t help but feel it could’ve really benefited from like a James Gunn Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack.
Also opening music taken from the Dark City trailer.
😨🙋
I saw this in the movie theater
Its more on alien vs human not the final fantasy game cloud squall etc.sephirot
This needs a REMAKE 🔥🔥🔥
I suppose this had nothing to do with THE Final Fantasy?
Still a realistic work of animation till date 2023
Underrated movie. It has its flaws, but honestly still works as its own thing. Audiences just weren't jazzed about the idea of an animated movie for adults.
So why its called final fantasy?
Aki Rose was the only character in the movie with real hair,
Kyoto Video sent me this. I used to watch it on VHS, and as a kid, I find it to be a snore fest and not at all like other Fianl Fantasy games.
The games had wonderful plots, but the movie studio decided to make this sack of shit.
Imagine a Kingdom Hearts film with this kind of style
For 2001, this was absolutely top of the line state of the art CGI everyone was blown away by. For 2023….. lol.
imagine if this was what the mario movie looked like
The movie allegedly failed because it crossed the uncanny valley.
They should have called it other thing, cause this is as similar to Final fantasy as Xenoblade is to Mortal Kombat.
XD
That was photorealistic then but now it's just our regular video games.
God bless.
Jesus only 397k views after 9 years?
Now Final Fantasy in game cutscenes look better than this which is crazy!
The animation was awesome but the storyline was total ass.
I wonder why they just didn't make it like one of their most popular franchise to this day Final fantasy did they not think the audience would like anything similar to the games..
Super boring movie, not related to final fantasy at all. No swords, magic, chocobos ,moggles, summons. It basically ruined squaresoft
The fact that a modern PC would be able to run this in real time is insane.
I just rewatched this in 4k, it's crazy good. The year I was born, it must have been incredibly groundbreaking back then.
Once you realize Mass Effect took lots of inspiration from this movie you can definitely see where. Character suits deaigns, weapons, ships, technology and UI elements, etc.
Chidlhood Scifi Horror movie 😭
I saw it long ago, I was just a little kid and I was amazed by the storyline, the universe, the concept.. everything. This made me open my mind, surely a game changer for me. Thanks for it.
Someone leave a distress beacon for a Max Lucado
Don’t forget, this came out when Tony hawk pro skater 3 came out. Game changer.
20 years from now and we'll look back on games from the PS5 and X-Box Series X and think wow, this looked really good back in the day.
This movie was way ahead of its time.
I thought back then this graphics were futuristic ahaha
멍청한 스퀘어 자식들 차라리 실사판 만들어도 이것보다는 싸겠다!
I wonder how Aki looks these days.
It's a good movie and very underrated. But if you go in expecting it to be like the videogames, you will be VERY disappointed.
There should be an epilepsy warning on this thing
UNDERRATED MOVIE!!!! Sakaguchi knows what lies at the heart of Final Fantasy!
See this trailer was for a different movie than the one we were given.
Why was it a flop??
I remember how the cut scenes of Final Fantasy 7 and 8 set my imagination on fire. I couldn’t wait to see a full 2 hour movie that made me feel that way. Unfortunately I just got a dark slog of a film that did nothing but give me a depressive episode that lasted a month.
Amazing that nowdays final fantasy game character looks far better than this in a console game, where they used huge pc servers back than to render this. but in term of animations in real time, we are still not there.
I just rewatched it and I don't know why a lot of people hate this movie just because it was titled "Final Fantasy". I love the game but I understand that the story of this movie is different. And it's unique and masterfully done.
I know so many people hate on this movie for the limited visual effects but I love it, it's kind of a compelling if not fully fleshed out concept n interesting designed world. Also the end credits song gets me Everytime
This movie is the biggest “wrong time, wrong place” I ever seen. Had this movie come out now with modern tech and now that video games aren’t seen as just Doom this could been good
Caraca, assisti esse filme em VHS logo quando foi lançado em 2001😢
Why’d this flop so badly, it looks good .
Wtf does this have to do with final fantasy.
I miss this trailer voice 🤣
This was a great underrated sci fi concept other than the utterly one-dimensional cheesy villain.
This blew my mind back in the day.
The technological breakthrough this movie was, at the time, cannot be overstated. Took many of us awhile to even realize it was CGI, because it was just so much better than everything else at the time (think triangle bewbs on tomb raider).
I remember thinking when I was a kid "it's so realistic, imagine what the future will be like"
Still holds up all these years later, despite being obviously dated.

Nonbeing is a mirror, the world its image. Man is the eye of this image beholding the hidden Essence.
How was this a Final Fantasy yet it was so cool back then?
Still so gutted for square soft.
The movie isnt even bad but it flopped so hard they couldn't exist anymore without the merger with enix.
Lembro que esse filme foi incrível pra época! E foi tão criticado por ser usado o nome de FF e não ter NADA de FF! HAHAHA
Aside from the title, what the hell does it have to do with the Final Fantasy video game series?
I finally watched this on tv long time ago.
When you think about it, it's basically a Ghostbusters 3;
Set in new york,
They fight ghosts but they are Space Ghosts bur they don't catch the ghosts and aren't equipped with proton packs.
And the space ghosts will take your life.
Sad it didn't do well financially.
Way ahead of its time but sadder that we haven't seen the same quality of CGI since.
REMASTER THIS PLEASE!!!!!!!!
Yeah Garnt was right. I can imagine this being super realistic in 2001. I was BORN in that year 💀
Trash taste brought me here
I never played the games but I lived for the FF movies and I didn’t even know this was FF at the time
good animation but bad final fantasy
Compare this with the prerendered cutscenes for FF7 which came out just 4 years prior. The amount of leaps they made with CGI back then was astounding.
I saw the movie in 2001 now I have it in blu-ray Final fantasy spirits within
