When it comes to in-game product placement, these sponsors would have been better off buying billboards, hiring skywriters, or maybe just throwing their money in the sea. Consider the branded cars, phones, adult periodicals, batteries and corn snacks by which we’ve been baffled in our games, then subscribe: http://www.tinyurl.com/SubToOxbox

Sam Fisher chomping on Airwaves chewing gum in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory seemed especially dubious. For a man whose business is sneaking up behind people undetected, the pungent whiff of menthol and eucalyptus would be a fast track to a burial in an unmarked grave and a hasty disavowal from the US government.

Or consider the depiction of Red Bull as an illegal, antisocial beverage with ties to organised crime in Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death. That can’t be good for business.

Nor could the appearance of Energizer batteries in Alan Wake. These branded batteries couldn’t sustain more than a few minutes of powering a bright flashlight before running dry. No wonder Alan switched to the generic kind for the DLC.
