Hanging vegetables are more beneficial than those buried in the ground! When our elders advised us to have a “pathya ahar” or healthy and balanced diet, they often preferred vegetarian food. Especially, vegetables that grow on vines, such as bitter gourd, bottle gourd, ridge gourd! But have you ever wondered why vegetables that grow underground, i.e. tubers like potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc. are not considered as good as hanging vegetables! If we look at it from the Pancha Mahabhuta perspective, vegetables that grow underground are primarily rich in earth and water elements, as they are completely buried in the soil. They do not get much exposure to sunlight, air, or other elements. The result is that they increase kapha and cause sluggishness in the body. In addition, they are sweet and heavy in taste, which further increases kapha and tama guna. Vegetables growing on vines are exposed to sunlight, air and other elements. There is a limit to their size; if they grow too big, they fall off the vine. You can call this the “self-preservation” of the plant. These vegetables are light and have a strong bitter taste, which helps in purifying the body and blood, provided they are cooked properly.
